I’ve recently noticed how most of my friends look at me with utter confusion when I start discussing different types of sex toys. As a sex blogger I assume everyone would know the absolute basics, but 10 years ago, I didn’t! Thanks to Ann Summers I thought that all clitoral vibrators looked like a lipstick. I thought the only male toys were blow up dolls and if asked what a Fleshlight was I would have said a torch.
So this guide is for absolute beginners. Those that saw my comment on Fleshlights and thought ‘well yeah, it is a torch right?’ I’m going to go over the very basics of most types of sex toys so you can find the right one for you. And you don’t end up asking your girlfriend if her rabbit is for anal stimulation, (Yes that actually happened to me.)
The rabbit vibrator is a dual stimulation toy. This means it stimulates inside the vagina and the clitoris, outside the vagina. Usually, a rabbit vibrator will have a set of ‘ears’ to stimulate the clitoris, hence the term rabbit. That is not always the case though. Below is an image of a typical rabbit I own. The larger section goes inside the vagina whilst the smaller section vibrates against the clitoris. Rabbits are popular among women since so many need clitoral stimulation to orgasm. They also don’t have to miss out on the feeling of penis in vagina sex.

A bullet vibrator is so named because of its bullet shape. It is usually the size of an average finger. Bullet vibrators sit on the cheaper end of the sex toy spectrum but can have a phenomenal impact on your sex life. They should be pressed against the clitoris and their small size makes them ideal for use during sex. Bullet vibrators are my favourite types of sex toys, especially the We Vibe Tango. It’s intensely powerful though so I wouldn’t recommend it to a beginner.
Best For – Clitoral Stimulation, Sex Toy Beginners, Females With Pain During Penetration

A cock ring is basically a ring for the penis. It is usually worn at the base of the shaft. Their main purpose is to prevent blood flow. This can make the penis harder and increase sexual stamina. You can also buy vibrating cock rings. These stimulate the penis and the woman’s clitoris during penetration. There are cock rings with two rings which also loop around the balls. If you or your partner are into anal play you can also pick up cock rings with a butt plug attached. Or a double penetrating cock ring with a dildo attached to the base. These mean the woman can receive vaginal and anal penetration simultaneously.
Best For – Penis Owners, Couples, Sex Toy Beginners
Safe Cockring Materials – Silicone, ABS Plastic, Stainless Steel
Dildos usually have the basic shape of a penis, though aren’t always a replication of them. They’re made for vaginal and anal stimulation. For safe anal stimulation, you must use a dildo with a flared base. This ensures it doesn’t disappear up your colon, which unlike the vagina, keeps going. They come in a huge range of shapes, materials and sizes and it takes experimentation to find one that works for you. Using lube will always make the experience more comfortable and pleasurable. Usually, they’re used with a thrusting motion to internally stimulate you. If you want a dildo that will stimulate the g-spot or p-spot then look for one with a curved tip.
Best For – Any Gender, Solo Use, Internal Stimulation, Sex Toy Beginners
Safe Dildo Materials – Silicone, Stainless Steel, Glass, Glazed Ceramic, Natural Stone, Wooden With Medical Grade Coating, ABS Plastic, Aluminium
Butt Plugs are for any gender to use for anal stimulation. A beginner should start on a circumference of around 3 Inches. A safe butt plug will have a flared base. They can come in a range of materials, shapes and sizes. I would recommend a silicone butt plug used with water-based anal lube for a first try. There are numerous types of butt plug, like vibrating, thrusting, inflatable and tailed. They give a feeling of fullness and wearers often use them in public and for long periods of time. Females can also use butt plugs to slim down the vaginal canal during sex or masturbation. There are also training sets available which can help to make anal sex more pleasurable.

These come under a few names, including jiggle balls and ben wa balls. They’re usually a round shape and are predominantly for toning the pelvic floor muscles. These are the muscles that stop urine flow and contract during orgasm. Keeping them toned is important for sexual health as weak muscles can result in urinary incontinence. They come in a range of weights and sizes depending on the strength of your pelvic floor muscles. You insert them into the vagina with some lube. If there is a string you leave this on the outside. Don’t worry about them getting lost as the vaginal canal is quite short. Some people experience pleasure from the feeling of them moving internally. For tips on how to use them, you can read my post here!

A love egg is so named as it often is the shape of an egg. They are a vibrating toy that’s inserted into the vagina or anus for stimulation. Some people may also choose to use them for clitoral stimulation. A thin cord usually attaches them to a remote control so vibration settings can be chosen whilst inserted. The more luxury love eggs are wireless so are only safe for vaginal use. They are a popular toy for couples, especially for use in public. Although finding a love egg that is discreet enough for public use may be a struggle.
Best For – Sex Toy Beginners, Public Use, Couples Play, Solo Play, Any Gender If Wired

A magic wand vibrator can be used for massage, but it has much better uses! They give broad stimulation to your clitoris, perineum or anus. Although you can buy battery powered wands, the mains powered ones are most powerful. Unlike a bullet vibrator, a large surface area is stimulated at once which can be preferable for some. Mini wand vibrators can be purchased but the normal wand vibrators are very large and noisy. It is possible to buy attachments which really broaden the way in which a wand vibrator can be used.
Best For – Broad External Stimulation, Any Gender, Experienced Sex Toy Users, Massage

Anal beads are fantastic for anal beginners. This is because they usually increase in size as they reach the base. The beads connect by a cord which may or may not be rigid. The rigid cords make it easier to insert the beads. The most popular method of use is to remove them at the point of orgasm, increasing the pleasure of climax. For hygiene reasons, I would recommend avoiding anal beads that connect via a string. For added pleasure, it is possible to buy anal beads with a vibrating function.
Best For – Anal Beginners, Any Gender, Anal Stimulation

Prostate massagers are for male anal stimulation. The prostate gland is located in the male rectum and produces semen. Ejaculation is often achieved through prostate massage alone. A prostate massager has a curve at the tip for optimal prostate stimulation. They are similar in design to a butt plug and often have a vibrating function. Males can wear one during sex but they are best for masturbation.
Best For – Males, Anal Stimulation, Solo Play

A strap-on is a dildo that is worn, usually via a harness. You can buy the dildo and harness as a set or you can buy them separately. The dildo attaches to the harness by slotting the flared base into an o shaped ring. The most popular uses for strap-ons are for girl on girl sex or for women to ‘peg’ their male partners. Pegging means the woman wears the strap-on and anally penetrates the male. There are also strapless strap-ons which do not use a harness. These are dildos that are inserted into the vagina. It is also possible to get a strap-on with a vibrating function for added stimulation.
Best For – Couples Play, Vagina Owners, Experienced Sex Toy Users
Safe Strap On Materials – Silicone
Fleshlight is actually a brand of toys for stimulating the penis. I’m including this brand since they are well known and their patent means the products are completely original. A Fleshlight is a cylinder-shaped toy with a lifelike gel insert. They’re designed to replicate vaginal and anal canals and most are moulded from actual porn stars. Lubricating your penis you then insert it into the fleshlight and do what feels good!
Best For – Penis Owners, Solo Play, Sex Toy Beginners
Safe Fleshlight Materials – Fleshlight boast a secret material. Although it is Phthalate free it is still porous. This means it should be cleaned thoroughly with water straight after use and not shared.
I hope you found this guide helpful! If there are any sex toys I didn’t include that you would like to know more about, please let me know!
